Second-harmonic generation from organic molecules incorporated in sol-gel matrices

Orientation of optically nonlinear organic molecules inside sol-gel matrices upon application of an external D.C. electrical field is demonstrated for the first time. The quadratic nonlinear response of silicon oxide or transition metal oxide based gels containing organic molecules has been determined from Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic (EFISH) measurements. Large concentrations of Optically Nonlinear Organic Molecules (ONOM) have been either incorporated inside the macromolecular network or chemically bonded to the oxide backbone of the gels. These results demonstrate the feasibility of permanently poled doped sol-gel matrices. Moreover, EFISH measurements performed on organic molecules appear to be a useful tool for monitoring the changes occurring during sol-gel transformations.     

Analysis of dynamic and stationary pattern formation in the cell cortex

We study a sol-gel mechanochemical model for cellular cytoplasm. Using conservation equations and a force balance equation, we derive equations for the sol-gel dynamics. Regular perturbation analysis suggests the growth of patterns which may be either dynamic or stationary, depending on parameter values. Nonlinear analysis, which indicates that these patterns remain bounded, is confirmed by numerically solving the mechanochemical equations. We use these analytical and numerical results to model two different biological problems: the dynamic formation of filopodia in nerve growth cones, and the growth of microvilli in epithelial cells.

The effects of laminin on the growth and differentiation of embryonal carcinoma cells in defined media

In this paper we have examined the growth and differentiation of the embryonal carcinoma cell line, F₉, in the defined medium EM-3 at low density. We show that the growth of F₉ and their differentiated cells (F₉-diff) in EM-3 is strongly density dependent. At low cell densities the growth of both cell types is severely limited and most of the cells do not survive. Although this poses a problem for working with F₉ and F₉-diff in EM-3, it provides a convenient assay for identifying molecules that support their growth at low density. Using this assay, we have determined that laminin, a newly isolated glycoprotein of basement membranes, significantly improves the growth and short-term survival of both F₉ and F₉-diff. However, addition of laminin to EM-3 is insufficient to promote the clonal growth of these cell types. Our findings also indicate that laminin promotes the attachment of F₉ and F₉-diff in defined media. On the basis of our results, we propose an attachment function for laminin during the early stages of mammalian development.     

Genetic structure of a tribal population, the Yanomama Indians. XIII. Dental microdifferentiation.

Data are presented on the frequency of the following eight dental traits in 635 Yanomama and 65 Makiritare Indians: upper central incisor rotation or winging, shoveling of maxillary incisors, maxillary molar hypocone reduction, Carabelli's trait, mandibular molar cusp number, mandibular molar cusp pattern rotation of second lower premolar, and pattern of second lower premolar cusps. Yanomama dentition is unusual in the high frequency of six cusps on the mandibular molars. There is marked dental microdifferentiation between villages; significant agreement was observed between a matrix of pairwise "dental distances" based on six morphological traits and corresponding matrices based on 11 genetic systems and on geographic location.
